Are you interested in learning how to play guitar?
When I set out to write this article about why someone would want to learn how to play guitar, I googled this very question and found a ton of “top 10” and “top 50” lists that included anything and everything from the ridiculous to the sublime.
When I was younger I was always interested in music. Music had a way of grabbing me and I had to be a part of it. I think that the guitar chose me more than the other way around. It wasn’t even a question in my mind that I had felt an overwhelming need to play guitar and create music. If you feel that same way but are unsure where to start, then read on!
Getting Started:
There is a baffling array of online resources available for new students. In my opinion, there are many great tools here and there that can help a more advanced player brush up on new skills or repertoire. BUT if tabs and Youtube video lessons were all that were needed to become at least a competent player, then why do we not see more evidence of this?
I think that the truth is that nothing beats having a great teacher that can help you mentor, define and map out your musical goals and help keep you on track. In order to succeed you have to have goals. How can you get to where you want to be if you don’t know where to go or how to get there? I can help!
I have my Bachelor's in Classical Guitar Performance from Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA in 1992 and 30 years of playing experience with the last 12 years has taught over 5700 individual and group lessons. I’ve taught people from ages 6 to 80 years old!
If you are a new or intermediate player interested in learning how to read music for guitar along with classical, folk, pop, rock, blues, and acoustic singer-songwriter material styles, I can help you!
How I teach guitar:
That all depends on you! It is important that I understand what your current abilities, goals, and expectations are. My studio has all of the tools, materials, and experience at your disposal. But the most important thing is your burning desire to learn and willingness to invest the time and energy in practicing and working on your goals a little bit every day! A large part of the value that I can bring to you is to be able to tailor craft a program that works on all aspects of your playing to get you to your goals faster!!

I've known Tim for more than a year now, ever since my wife and I started taking music lessons from him via the Music and Arts store in Naperville, Illinois. In that time, I've come to appreciate Tim's deep musical expertise, his personable nature and ready sense of humor, and his dedication to his craft. I feel privileged to be one of his students and hope to remain under his tutelage indefinitely. Tim Nunes, Lisle, IL.
